From A Volunteers Perspective

A day with Hope Smiles was definitely one that I will never forget and always treasure. Third and fourth year students from both Meharry and the University of Tennessee Health Science Center attended this volunteer effort at the downtown Nashville auditorium. Together, we worked under a fantastic team of talented dentists from all over Tennessee, who imparted their knowledge of dentistry on us, were patient and kind to us, and constantly encouraged us. We were able to perform numerous extractions and even provide fillings for the underprivileged in Nashville. It was such a humbling and joyful experience relieving patients of pain with an extraction, or seeing a patient light up after having a broken tooth restored.  Working with the team at Hope smiles really encouraged me to pray for and with patients. This experience really made me realize how important it is to spend time with people, listen to their stories, and love them well.

What an amazing ministry in Hope Smiles. The Hope Smiles team was truly a picture of the body of Christ working together. Not only did I gain experience in dentistry that day but also a chance to see how I can share the Gospel with patients. For me, Hope Smiles was an incredible opportunity to see how ministry in dentistry looks like. I can’t think of a better way to spend a Saturday. I look forward to serving on this team again.
